Cabo Matapalo is located on the southernmost tip of the Osa Peninsula. The Osa Peninsula is in the extreme southwestern part of Costa Rica near the border with Panama. Cabo Matapalo is where the rainforest meets the sea. Surfers come to Cabo Matapalo for its renowned point breaks, and the seclusion and lack of competition for waves. This area is mostly undeveloped and isolated and people are scarce but that is also what makes it most appealing to the hardy souls who come here. Along with Carate and Corcovado it is one of the most extreme regions of Costa Rica. The area combines dense jungles chock full of animals, breathtaking beaches and world class surfing in a peaceful remote setting. |

Eco-Lodges, Cabinas, Rental Homes And Lodgings In Matapalo |
This beach offers perfect waves in one of the most beautiful and untouched areas left in Costa Rica. Located just across the bay from Pavones , it catches the same swells, but is much less surfed. There are 3 places to go surfing in Matapalo: Two world-class right rock / point breaks that can get excellent, breaking for 200 meters when it is good. Both are very rocky in the beginning and the end of the wave, experts only surfing with a bigger board if there is a serious swell. These breaks are in the two bays right before the huge landslide. Pan Dulce (sweet bread) is a much smaller an mellower beach break. There is also a cloud break-type right that only breaks on the biggest swells. This wave breaks off the landslide in front of rocks. There are lots of sharks in this area, adding to the element of danger.
There are lodges and private rental homes in the area. In fact, some of the most renowned eco-lodges of the area are located here. If you decide to rent a house, have a cooler & stock up on ice, food & drink in Puerto Jimenez as it is not a close nor easy drive. There is one small cantina on the way to Matapalo, Buena Esperanza or Martina’s as the locals know it by, a very popular locals hang out, but other than that there are NO stores or restaurants. One can get here from Puerto Jiménez, Pavones or Golfito.
Other nearby attractions are Corcovado National Park, and nearby Isla De Cano , allegedly the best diving in Costa Rica. |
