Immigration / Medical In Costa Rica

You will generally be granted a 90 day visa upon entering Costa Rica. Please check the date on your passport to ensure that is does not expire while you are vacationing to Costa Rica. Some travelers have been denied entry into the country if the expiration of your passport falls within the 90 day visa time period. If you would like to extend your stay for another 90 days, you are required to leave the country for 72 hours, and then re-enter on a new 90 day visa permit. Many travelers use this inconvenience as an option to visit Panama or Nicaragua. There are many buses available to the either border. Rent a Car agencies will not allow you to leave the country with a rented vehicle.

People coming to San Jose Costa Rica will need a passport from their home country, that is not getting ready to expire. Check the date on your passport before making your Vacation to Costa Rica. Make sure your departure date is well before your expiration date on your passport. If you want to stay longer you may visit Panama or Nicaragua for 72 hours and then re-enter for another 90 days. You are required to carry a copy of your passport with you at all times. If you are stopped by officials, a photocopy with your photo, passport number and entry stamp will usually suffice. There are over 30 consulates and embassies in San Jose, most located in the downtown area.

You are unlikely to encounter any serious diseases in Costa Rica. Sanitary standards are high and the health system is excellent. During the past two wet seasons there have been several outbreaks of the mosquito-borne disease dengue but so far there have been no reported cases of the more serious hemorrhaging dengue. No vaccinations are required to enter Costa Rica as epidemic diseases have been all but eradicated throughout the country. Infectious hepatitis, a serious problem throughout Central America, is reported only rarely in Costa Rica.

Several private hospitals in San Jose offer emergency medical services to foreigners are reasonable prices: Clinica Biblica (avenida 14, calles central & 1, tel. 223-6422) also has a 24-hour pharmacy. Costa Rica’s Social Security system (the Caja) offers a medical insurance assistance program for foreigners needing emergency medical assistance.
